Happy 18th Birthday Jared

I didn't feel old turning 30. I didn't feel old turning 40. Suddenly I feel old now that my first born is 18! The day of his birthday we celebrated with a family dinner and cake. Andy and I had planned a surprise for Jared for the weekend. Andy invited Jared's closest friends and they met at China Buffet, one of Jared's favoite restaurants. Andy brought Jared and Krysta into the restaurant where we were all waiting to yell "Surprise". I know he was not expecting that and it was fun to see his face. His friends were very kind and got him some nice gifts. After everyone had filled their bellies, it is a buffet afterall, we brought everyone to our house. They hung out, played games and shared another cake. These moments are fleeting. All too soon my baby boy will be out on his own. I treasure these moments more and more.

Halloween 2011

This year for Halloween we were busy! You can see that we went to Boo at the Zoo. We also participated in Hadley's Halloween parade on Halloween morning. We rounded out the evening by Trick or treating with our friends the Taylor's while it was still light out. Then we came home and trick or treated in the neighborhood. The girls definitely learned how to use their manners. They also walked the whole way. Very impressive. We covered alot of ground.

First Game of the Season

Each year our family attends the first game of the football season to support our Louisville Cardinals. This year is was super Hot that day. All of us were thrilled to be there except Hunter. He professed his strong dislike of the game. Therefore he looks less than happy to be with us. I am told he will grow out of this. Go Cards!

Everyone had their picture taken on the first day of school. Hunter's picture was the earliest, it was still dark outside. Jared did go to Seminary but we waited until he got home to photograph him. We combined him with the girls. Hadley officially started Kindergarten at Christ Lutheran Preschool and Kindergarten. I am treating it more like Jr. Kindergarten. She will repeat Kindergarten in public school next year. Jenna couldn't be left out. She is SOOOOOO excited to go to school next year. She can not wait until she is 4 and can go to Preschool. In looking back at my other first day of school pictures, I can not believe that my kids are this big. I can not remember where the time went. I am holding onto to my youngest just a little longer, knowing that these will be my last grade schoolers. It is bittersweet but I wouldn't have it any other way.

One of the things that we love at county bridge is the escape it provides from the electronic world. Up here the kids play and laugh and interact because there is nothing else for them to do :) Jenna is playing with her cousins and they all had a great time.

We celebrated Hadley's birthday party with a family dinner and cake. Hadley asked me to make noodles with white sauce AKA Chicken Alfredo! So, I happily made it for her and she didn't disappoint. She ate 2 BIG helpings. After dinner she played in the sprinkler. A quick wardrobe change into warm PJ's and she was ready for cake and gifts. It was a fun night.

Hunter, up and at it early for his first day of 8th grade. JCPS was actually delayed by 2 days for the start of the school year. This unheard of event happened because of some strong storms. 1/3 of all of the residents in Louisville had lost power. By Monday night, there were still schoools without telephone and internet. So Tuesday was postponed. Wednesday was the real first day of school. I thoroughly enjoyed this unexpected time off from the school day hustle. We had no other plans so they were total free days!!!

4th of July 2011

We started the day out in our traditional way, breakfast of pancakes and sausage at the church. This year we doubled up with the 6th ward and ate in the gym. The weather was to unpredictable to hold it outside.

For an afternoon picnic, we went to Beckley Station park. It is a new Splash Park. The kids loved it. Jenna has gotten over her fear of getting her face and hair wet. The food was yummy and the company was nice.

We had a delicious grilled dinner and anxiously awaited the sunset so we could see our fireworks. This year we purchased some fun ones at the tent. Anyway, we started the night off with sparklers. All was well until then. Hadley is NOT a fan. She then spent time with Aunt Shelly. Jenna however was a different story. She LOVED them and wanted to do more. When the bigger fireworks came out, Hadley went inside and watched TV. I then went between the house and outside to keep an eye on all. Several of our neighbors had the same plan. It was fun to watch everyone's fireworks. We had one exciting event. One of our neighbors lit their pyrotechnics and it did not go up, it went straight toward us. A friend our ours was visiting and he absorbed the firework. It melted his shorts and burned his leg mildly. Good thing he was quick. If it had been me, I would have been burned severely. It was a very fun day! I love celebrating our country's independence.

One day I did all of the girls' hair. They ALL had knots and tangles. Once I got through the jumbled mess, we tried to do something fancy. Jenna calls her style, Minnie Mouse ears. Emmy and Hadley had Dog ears. The boys made a huge fort that they slept in for multiple days. Hunter was a good engineer. We loved being with the younger kids. I couldn't believe how much quieter it was with the big ones gone. I was glad when they returned though. We just were not complete.

We had some friends over to help make Daddy's Day cookies. It was a combined effort. I made the cookies, Jared made the template for the XBOX controller, and Abby made the frosting. The kids went to town and had a terrific time. They licked and decorated like nobody's business. Usually this fun is saved for Christmas, it was a treat to do it early in the summer.

Andy was surprised by his treats. I can't say that he ate it, but he did share it with the kids. They had been patiently waiting and never snitched that we had made a surprise. That was a fun afternoon memory.

Perfectly straight hair is what Hadley inherited form me. She longs for beautiful, curly hair. So one night I put part of her hair in those squishy pink foam rollers and this was the result. Don't worry, it promptly fell within an hour and all traces of actual curls were gone. We have tried this one other time. Hadley was very patient getting her hair rolled and didn't complain about sleeping in them. I think it may have to wait for a little bit so she can look forward to the results.

Ward Talent Show 2011

Ben Taylor and Jared were the MC's for the evening. Mostly Ben did the commenting and Jared tried not to be embarrassed.
Ben is famous for this trick. He actually puts a screw driver up his nose then pulls it out. Gross! How entertaining!!! Some people were really freaked out.
Jenna performed 3 songs for everyone. She sang Twinkle, Twinkle, little star, I am a child of God, and I like to look for rainbows. She did very well with very little help from me. From the picture it looks like she was a little shy but once she got going she was looking out at the audience and performing well.

Hunter was missing form this event. He chose to stay home and clean his room rather than be "bored" at this activity. My Activity girls form Primary helped organize this activity for the ward. It was both a talent show and a Derby themed event. Derby pie and Mint juleps were served. Traditions that should not be forgotten.

Mother's Day at Preschool

The preschool Hadley attends, Christ Lutheran, has a special Mother's Day Tea for their 4 year old class. Hadley was so excited about this event. I had been told by numerous people "not to miss this". So, we looked forward to this day with MUCH anticipation. Hadley practiced her songs and movements. She teased me with bits of information like, we made recipes etc. . . After much waiting the day arrived. We congregated in the chapel. There are 2 classes. Each class sat on separate sides of the chappel. It was arranged so that you would have the best view of your child. Then the children proceeded down the aisle. They were nervous and excited at the same time. Their music was phenominal. I loved it!!! We were then instructed to adjourn to their classrooms.

In the classrooms our children served us punch and filled our plates with delicious food that they had prepared. There was a yummy beef dip with crackers, jello jigglers, fruit and fruit dip. I was very impressed with the manners that the kids had learned. Several times I heard Hadley's classmates say, "only 2 crackers" or "use your fork to pick up the jello". They were very polite. They were most impressive when they requested to keep filling our cups with punch. Apparently that was the favorite thing that learned. Each child did fabulous. Amazingly there were no spills.

While in the room, we got to observe artwork and poems all about moms. They made us feel so special. As much as I loved the gifts, I loved that my daughter was so proud of herself. I have seen her blossom this year. I thank Ms. Simmons for her patience and understanding with Hadley. Hadley has come out of her shell. She is confident and sure of herself. Academic learning is thriving, but much more than that is stirring in my daughter. I will treasure my memories of this special Mother's Day Tea. It was the culmination of a year of learning and growth.

I know how quickly this precious time flies. I am so grateful for the wonderful people in my life who help shape and mold my children. I can't do it all by myself! I am truly blessed.

My son is growing up!

This post is very late but I wanted to include it anyway.

In February of 2011 Jared was able to perform his first baptism. Ella Grace Kincaid wanted to be baptized and she wanted Jared to perform the ordinance. Jared of course said yes. My boy who shows few emotions or says too many words acted very composed. His Dad reviewed the words for this ordinance. I never saw Jared practicing, but I know he did.

We had a special FHE with the Kincaids so that Jared and Ella could get familiar with the holding technique. I felt better after that was accomplished. It gave everyone time to laugh and giggle and get comfortable with each other .

So I was following the Kincaids journey of finding proper baptism clothes and then it dawned on me that Jared would need his "whites" also. We searched the closet at church and found some white pants that were tagged with the right waist size. whew. . . that was easy. The night before the baptism, Jared finally tried them on. It is then that we learned that although they were marked for a 30 inch waist, they had been taken in about 4 inches!!! Yikes, Jared was able to fit them although he was uncomfortable with the tight fit. As we discussed this, Jared's YM President admitted that those pants once belonged to him. He actually served his mission in the Louisville area. His mother had taken them in for him prior to his mission. While serving here, he gained 40 lbs and could no longer fit them, so he donated them to the closet. I love how the world is smaller with in the church. With all of this, both Jared and Ella were dressed appropriately. I keep waiting for a photo to be sent to me because of course we forgot our camera.

Jared performed the ordinance and had a chance to perform it again as Ella's foot came up. He stayed calm, cool and collected. I was very proud of him.

As I saw my son, dressed in "whites", I realized just how much he has grown. I teared up to think that soon, he will be leaving our family to serve a mission and "whites" will be a part of his wardrobe. I could visualize my son in the Temple and making covenants that will be so important to him for eternity. I guess it was a glimpse of who my son will be that choked me up.

To have worthy Priesthood holders in my home is a precious gift. I am thankful for their spirit and love that all of them share within our home. I know that Jared will always remember his first baptism. I hope he has many more to come.

Basically I just have to pay tribute to my friends here.

I don't profess to have alot of friends. I think my quiet reservations intimidate people and they have incorrect analysis of me. Anyway, I will say this. The friends that I do have, I am LOYAL. I cling to your friendships. They buoy me up. They inspire me!

This past weekend I had a friend request on FB. I was so excited to confirm this friendship and what made it even better is she sent me a message. In this brief message, I could totally hear my friend talking. She always had the gift of gab with a pen and paper :). I read part of her message to my son and my hubby. They probably thought I was geeky by reminiscing about my past glory days, but I was not embarrassed or ashamed.

I guess what I am trying to say is that if you are my friend, my true friend, I have not forgotten about you. Our memories are imprinted in my mind forever. FB has brought me back into the lives a few true friends whom I've lost touch with. My joy has been full. The other thing to think about though is. . . IF you are on my friend list just know that you are stuck with me. I do not give up easily! Get use to it!!!

A fine day for a pretty dress

Hadley has always been my fashion conscious child. This particular morning, she wanted a dress and she was going to choose it. So she put on the the turquoise dress. Ummmm. . . a bit too short for my liking. I convinced her to give it to Jenna. Jenna was thrilled with a new hand me down. Hadley therefore was left without a pretty dress until. . . she found this beauty that my mom had gotten for her months ago. At that time it was too big. Not to worry, it is now the perfect size. Hadley loved the hat, wore it all day including preschool. Jenna loved her dress and matching bows. It's great to be sisters and share the love of clothes.

Hadley's "curly" hair

Hadley, I have been told is my mini-me. Well, with that comes naturally straight hair. I know all of you out there with curly hair fantasize about non-frizzy days when it is humid. All I have to say is you can change your look much quicker than us straight haired girls. When it is humid, our hair just gets flatter and flatter.

Hadley loves to get the braids out of her hair because then it is curly. Believe it or not, I actually still own my foam rollers from a couple of decades ago. Hadley found them and I told her we would do her hair in rollers one night. Well of course one night, turned into TONIGHT! I didn't get the before pictures. But these are the after pictures. She loved the bounce in her hair. As is typical of my hair, most of the curl was gone within 2 hours. We enjoyed it while we could.

Snow Day 2011

We were "blessed" with several snow days this school year. One of them we actually had about 6 inches of snow. So we met Andy after work and took the kids to our favorite sledding hill. This year Hadley was not too afraid to go by herself. Throughout the evening we kept getting higher and higher up the hill. Jenna learned how to walk up the hill by herself and carry her own sled!!!!The boys did their own thing with snowboards on different hills. After almost 2 hours of sledding, we called it a night. We hit Dairy Queen and took them up on there buy one get one free blizzards when it snows. We only bought 2 blizzards, got 4 and split them 6 ways. Good math huh?? It was a fun evening.

The Carpenter's got a "new" replacement trampoline this year! (thank you Grandma Great!) And since it was 82 degrees a couple days, it saw lots of use! I love that picture of Josh where his head is in his hands! Poor guy the only boy surrounded by 3 girls his age!! Check out that dare devil Jared! It was amazing the height he got on that thing!

Temple Trip

One of the highlights of this Christmas was the trip we took to the San Antonio Temple. Diane and I took the four oldest, while Shelly generously stayed home with the six youngest. (That doesn't seem so fair does it???) It was so wonderful being in the temple with the kids while they did baptisms. The Brown's from our ward inLouisville were also doing baptisms there. It is always fun to run into people you know at the temple. Makes you feel like you are all in the right place at the right time. Afterwards we went over to the bookstore across the street, while there Jordyn noticed her phone was missing. After scouring the car and saying a prayer we went back to the temple. I went back inside to look for it. (I was the only one still in a dress) I had to stand on the benches but I found it on top of the lockers. Then we went to a Chinese Buffet. I would like to go on record as saying that I don't enjoy this place but for some reason the kids all wanted to go there so there we went. This is one of the lovely things you can find there. Yes that's right, it's an octopus! Hunter actually ate two of them! He said the tentacles were the best part!!!!!

The weather was so nice and we had to get out of the house. So off we went to the school playground and the kids ran around and climbed and had a good time. Hunter and Logan chose to go to another park so they aren't in any pictures but all the other kids were there including Shelly this year who come to play and have Christmas with the Carpenter's in TX.

Each year we have several Christmas Eve traditions. This is one of my favorites. All the kids gathering around trays full of cookies, bowls full of frosting and containers full of toppings. (if I'm honest I have to admit that I just love eating all of the above mentioned treats) For an activity that use to take close to an hour, all the big kids have gotten quite adept at decorating a few cookies picking their favorites and moving on. Jared was actually seething anger. . . He made an anti-apple cookie to share his displeasure of his phone being shut down. I still treasure it though and hope that as they look back on this they will do so fondly.

One of the special moments this past Christmas was the opportunity we had to be apart of the blessing of Joshua. It was extra special for Andy since Josh shares Andy's name. What an honor!!!! So Andy was able to be there and join in the circle.We hope that Josh will always know where his middle name came from. Mostly we hope that he will learn to love the Harp's as much as we love this little guy. He brings joy and happiness when he walks or runs into a room. It has been amazing to see the blessings of the Lord in our dear friends lives. They have been cradled in the palm of his hands through so many trials. Joshua is an example of love in action We love you guys!!!

Jenna wanted a different style, so I let her wear her hair down. It really only lasted about 20 minutes before she complained about it being in her eyes. Then it was back to normal for her.

Hadley loves to have "curly" hair. She was not blessed with this naturally. So when we remove her braids in the morning, sometimes she asks for curly hair. This morning I let her keep it. As you can see, she got LOTS of volume. She loved it!!!

Boo at the zoo

We braved the crowds and went to the World's Largest Halloween party at our zoo. The zoo does and exceptional job with their displays. Pictures don't do them justice. There were so well done. The girls were great troopers. It was super busy. We were hurded through the experience. The pictures of the girls with the princesses were at the end of the night. They were so excited to get their pictures. I am glad that we went.

A Day at the zoo

We usually go to the zoo on Thursdays. On this particular day, it was a bit cool when we got there. So the girls had on their jackets. This was the day that I let them climb on all of the statues and play. Usually we don't stop. Either there is a long line, it is too hot, or I am more worried about my workout being stopped. That being said, we had a lovely time relaxing and enjoying more of what the zoo offers. We are also usually one of the first people in the zoo. Soooo, we had the park to ourself. What fun! The girls got to play on what they wanted without sharing with others. ( A little selfish, huh) Here's to the spring, may we find ourselves back at the zoo again.

This year we joined a group of friends for a picnic at the park. It was warm but everyone had a good time. My big boys were there also, but they were off exploring and hiking. Too big for the park!!! One of the great joys I am able to enjoy as the father of 4 all varying ages, hair color, eye color and height is the joy of returning home. Sometimes it comes with no fanfare from the oldest two but both of the girls are always excited to see me….well at least Jenna is. In all seriousness when I come home I am often met with excitement when the door opens. Usually the first thing I hear is Hadley saying daddy’s home and then Jenna squealing with delight as she runs to greet me. It makes all of the stress of the day go away.

Our nightly routine includes having dinner shortly after I get home and then reading scriptures with the girls included if they are having a good night and then taking them up to get ready for bed. We usually start the bedtime routine around 6:30 and if I am home I get to help put them to bed. It is a great joy for me to do this because as a child I never had anyone read to me or sing me songs before I went to bed. With the boys I was always gone for work so I didn’t get to participate in the nightly activities. So I guess you can say I am living my childhood again with the help of my two girls. (By the way Pam is always amazed at the songs I don’t know and the books I haven’t read.) Once we are done with the books it is a quick drink of water and then lights out followed by songs. Hadley has her song and Jenna has her song. When Pam sings to them they get their song. Hadley’s song is pretty easy (it was Jared’s song too and it is hummed) and Jenna’s song has always been “I am a child of God” because that is the one song I knew all the words to. She really likes it. Some other favorites are “twinkle, twinkle little star” (believe it or not I didn’t always have the words right but Jenna has corrected me and I now have it right) and the best song I sing is “Pants on the ground” which I made up the lyrics to. This is one of Jenna’s favorites and she always laughs when I sing it to her. Then it is off to dream land for the girls.

All of the above leads me to last night which was one of those nights that probably didn’t mean much to anyone but me. I sleep pretty hard and don’t always hear when the girls wake up or when Pam gets out of bed. Last night I was stirring and knew that Pam was awake and I asked her if that was the girls? She indicated that it was and that she had been up with them several times and that Jenna was having night terrors. (Usually happens when they are or have been sick or they are over tired) When I got in their room Hadley was awake and saying that she was having bad dreams too. I was able to calm them down but Hadley wanted to sleep in our room and it is rare that we let them do that so I decided to try and calm her down some more. The crying continued so I asked her to move over and I laid down on her bed. I have had to do this before and she went right back to sleep. Well the crying stopped and I was facing away from her and could hear her heavy breathing. I laid there for what seemed to me like it was enough time. I rolled off her bed slowly and as quietly as possible. I stood up and I was almost to the door and the crying started again but lightly. Jenna asked for a drink and Hadley asked for the music. I took care of Jenna’s request and turned on the CD player and all was right in the world again. (Except for the dog freaking out at 3:30am) I am glad for the memories from last night and I hope that they will be good memories for the girls as they grow up.

I enjoy the tender moments with my kids a lot and when I can calm their fears and help them no matter what the problem is it brings me to a very happy place in life. I am so grateful for my family and the joy they bring into my life. They are all so unique in who they are and I am glad that they are mine. I am so lucky to have such a great wife and wonderful kids.

Grand Caymans

The Grand Caymans adventure didn't quite go as planned. The Seas were really rough and the waves were swelling to 5 feet. The sting ray bar was closed. This was our whole reason for choosing this blog. Moving beyond disappointment, we had to readjust.

The Ship docked on the other side of the island. It was really primitive here. We got off the boat and looked around. Hunter surely made lemon-aid out of lemons. He found a patch of sand and made the best of it.

Andy and Jared ended up going back to the boat for mini golfing, pool time and fun. Hunter and I stayed on the beach and played. Hunter played in the sand and I found many great conch shells. It was really relaxing and memorable.

Although I was disappointed about not playing with the sting rays, I still enjoyed myself. The water was so warm and clear. Picturesque in every sense of the word.

As our ship, the Carnival Freedom, was departing from Ft. Lauderdale we witnessed some cool things. First, we were able to watch the Coast Guard protect our water ways. This was a manned, armed coast guard boat that effectively reminded smaller boats to get out of our way. The next cool thing we were able to see was the Pilot boat. It was so cool!!! This smaller boat paced itself next to our ship. Then the pilot climbed down a rope ladder and eventually ended up on the boat. It was super impressive!!!

These are pictures of us as the ship was preparing to set sail. The boys refused to bring sunglasses. They didn't believe me when I told them the glare off of the water would be bright. You do get used to it after awhile. The boys were impressed with the lunch buffet that we enjoyed prior to going out on deck.

This summer Jared has been obsessed with all things Parkour. So this summer I received a text from Jared. It said to come outside. This is what I found. He has spider like skills. He is nimble and quick. He was mildly intimidated with the daunting task of jumping down. I refused to watch. Since then he has mastered getting down. He was climbing since he could walk. I shouldn't be surprised!!

Hadley is going to Christ Lutheran Pre-school. She attends Mon-Wed 8:55-11:55. The week before it started they had an orientation day for the kids. So Hadley was so excited to go to school. Hadley had no problem walking right in. No tears, no looking back! Just forward without fear. Love this girl.

Hadley celebrated her 4th birthday at home with family. It was a great day for her. She loved each of her gifts. She shared with her sister and even Hunter enjoyed one of her balloons. When I think back to her birth I get choked up. She truly was a miracle in the making. I am so humbled and blessed to have her call me mommy. She brings laughter, giggles, chasing and love to our family. Her emotions are so genuine and pure. She truly helped me see some differences between girls and boys. I wouldn't have it any other way. We love you Hadley Girl!!

Hunter's 13th Birthday

As we neared our journey's end, you could feel vacation leaving. Knowing that we would be returning to "normal" life was on our minds. The girls were tired of being confined. We broke out the lap tops and watched DORA. What a lifesaver. Hunter played and wrestled with the girls to keep them entertained. As dreadful as it was to leave vacation, it felt like it was time. We had a fabulous time and I would totally recommend another RV trip to anyone. We loved the convenience of having our necessities with us. The freedom to move about the cabin as needed. I loved food having a place to be instead of at my feet. It was fun to play games, laugh and be a family. We endured it well!!!

We walked through the doors at the Mall of America and what did we see????? Kinect for xbox looking at me!!! All of the guys in my family were beyond words. They got to try everything out. It was so much fun for them. The girls and I walked to the theme park while they played.

Leaving Montana

The day we left the Montana campground we ended up driving MUCH more than we had planned. It started out as a normal RV day. First you empty the tanks. NOT my job. Jared and Andy worked it out though. Then we traveled. This day we went through Wisconsin and Minnesota. We had a very hard time finding a campground in Minnesota. Because they are famous for all of their lakes, and SO proud of them, camping prices were very high. We elected to keep driving, rather than pay 50-60 dollars a night to sleep in our home on wheels. We had reached the conclusion that we would stop around Minneapolis. The plan was to park in a Wal-mart parking lot and sleep. We were headed to the Mall of America the next day. Somewhere around 10 pm Andy followed signs to another campground. He worked out a deal for $20. We hooked up to electricity, slept and took off early the next morning. This final picture is of our rural campground before we left. It was much better looking during the daylight hours than at night. Let's just say I could've sworn I heard banjos playing through the night. Another thing we did that we didn't photograph was stop by a park and "BORROW" their electricity hook ups so we could cook our dinner. It was a lovely sight that the kids enjoyed running around at. They loved the water but the mosquitoes were ravenous!!!

The first day of our journey home

We welcomed a new found source of delight and quiet. . . play dough. Who'd a thunk, huh. The girls were enthralled and loved the change of toys. We loved that they stayed in their seats around the table. No one was tossed around or bumped. It was so refreshing. We then used the play dough as a bribery tool. It worked like a charm. Best part of the experiment. . . this was Dollar Tree play dough, so when it got mixed, I didn't even fret. No big deal. Six colors for a $1.00. Can't go wrong there.

When we pulled into our campground for the night, the presence of a pool was a huge hit. I am not going to lie, it was in the 70's. Too cold for my warm blood to dip into the pool. None the less, I dressed the girls and sent them with all of the boys. Jenna was the first one out. So we went to the playground and she had the run of the place. Next came Hadley. When their lips are blue, it might be a little too cold. The boys horsed around and had a great time. Andy was the next out of the cool pool. At this point we took the girls to the RV to get ready for bed.

It was a refreshing change of pace. I am glad no one pushed me in so I could experience the invigorating water. The nights rest was marvelous. Cool nights always make for better sleeping.

The more we get together

This is what happens after we have been together for awhile. . . Our true colors come out. We had just left Bobby's house and were all a little tired. Hadley was as pleasant as ever (uhhh. . . not really!!!) Sorry Ma, Bobby and Tommy! The boys were being silly and laughing it up. Jenna was quite content on my lap in lieu of a nap. We made it to our dinner destination, the Chinese Buffet. After bellies were filled, life resumed a more normal tone.

Glacier National Park

We drove to Glacier National Park. The scenery was stunning, just getting to the parking lot. As our group got to the bus pick up spot, we missed out on the first available bus. So we were waiting for the next bus (45 minute wait). It gave us time to play and speak to the park ranger. I realized that it would be a long time before we saw our RV again. So I took the opportunity to gather some food and drinks for our impromptu adventure. Good thing, we didn't get back until 4:30. We planted ourselves in the front of the line to get on the next available bus. The crowds started coming and we didn't want to miss out again. The weather was beautiful, the company was 2nd to none and the experiences unforgettable. Loved it!!!

Glacier National Park

Our first night at the campground near Glacier National Park. We enjoyed our time there. We made s'mores they were so tasty. I had sent the boys to score us some marshmallow sticks. They came back with these really dry, crunchy sticks. So I let them know that they need to take them off of a tree so they are fresh and green. As I was removing my 2nd stick, an elderly man asked me if I wanted some marshmallow toasting sticks so i don't destroy that tree. What could I say??? Of course I was very gracious and embarrassed. He then proceeded to bring us 6 extend able sticks. They were super nice!!! Thank you RV neighbor. Note to self, don't damage the trees. :)

ummm. . . should I be worried????

One night last week I heard one of the boys in my room after lights out. Didn't think much of it at the time. The noise stopped and I forgot about it until. . .

I came up stairs and found this unusual artwork?? Seriously, who does this. Knowing it was one of my boys I barge into Hunter's room, "What is this ???" He snickers and says "talk to Jared".

So I proceed to Jared's room. "What the heck is THIS????" He laughs and says it is art.

So aside from the decapitated blond (which Hadley did), the head on a screw balanced by a pink eraser, which part should I be worried about? My boys are not usually sweet or sentimental. Getting a love note is a rare thing. So I will take this as a love trinket. I will keep it for awhile anyway.

Glacier National Park

My girls were so exhausted that they both fell asleep on me. I asked Jared to take this picture of us and I closed my eyes. I really didn't get any sleep because of the 2 hot bodies on me in a hot RV. Let's just say the ride was more enjoyable this way.

The boys were in charge of the fire. I didn't like the boy scout version of how to start a fire so I had to put in my two cents worth. The boys were not thrilled with my intervention.

This park was so accommodating. They allowed us to set up tents and have a fire pit. We truly enjoyed our time here. We stayed here 2 nights. The campers were friendly. It was a perfect set up for us. All of the extra people we brought along loved it also.

When we go to Montana. . .

Typically, every time we go to Montana there are forest fires. We visit in the summers so it makes sense. The dry weather has made the conditions perfect for fires. This year we were pleasantly surprised not to breathe in the smoky air. UNTIL. . .

While the boys were hiking up St. Mary's mountain, I stayed at the house with the girls. We were blowing bubbles on the porch when I heard and felt this big explosion! I nervously checked the house, it was fine. I made an emergency escape plan. This involved me baking the RV up with 3 little girls inside. Nothing happened! I relaxed. A short while later, sirens, sirens, sirens!!!!

Apparently the neighbor below Grandma's house thought it was a good idea to smoke around a small propane tank. Hence the explosion. The fire ended up burning 3 1/2 acres. The neighbor was taken to the hospital.

The boys had the camera so when they drove home they caught some good photos. Then Jared and Hunter stayed outside and watched through binoculars and the zoom lens.

It made the news that night. What a lot of activity in such a rural small town.

So we joked and said, "It wouldn't be a trip to Montana without a fire."

Day 6 of our family vacation

The morning of Day 6 was full of preparation. Each of the guys had a backpack full of specific things they needed for their hike up St. Mary's mountain. A little background. . . The last time we were in Montana the boys attempted to hike St. Mary's. They were joined by their cousin. She was not so excited or sure that she could hike the mountain. So. . . they turned around and came home. It has always been one of those things that they wished they had finished. This trip it was a priority for them to attempt and finish this. It was on Hunter's bucket list :) They did indeed make it all the way up. Jared was definetyly the leader of the pack. I don't think this kid broke a sweat. Hunter and Andy were a bit more reserved in their enthusiasm as the hike up was almost vertical. I am so proud of these guys. What an accomplishment!!! I can say that I hiked up to St. Mary's, but my attempt was pre-children and when I was young and fit. Good JOB!!!

Day 5 found us rested and ready. The boys (Andy, Jared and Hunter) and Uncle Donald went hiking up Kootnai Creek. It started out cool but warmed up nicely. The night before had been a chilly night. It was so refreshing to have coolness greet you in the morning instead of oppressive heat and humidity. The girls and I stayed at the house. We played with Deanna. Blew bubbles and tried to stay out of trouble.

We arrived in Stevensville Mt. around 3:00pm. It was so nice to see our extended family members. The day we arrived, it was a bit chilly for us. The high was in the high 60's. With no humidity we were a little cool. It was such a welcome relief from our insufferable heat. The cousins (minus Roslyn) Loved playing together in the RV. The favorite place was the bunk bed. It was so much for the girls to get to know each other and become best friends. Hadley and Deanna insisted on sharing shoes. Good thing their feet were similar sizes.
